Victorian women were known for their delicate and demure appearance, and some went to extreme lengths to achieve this look. One of the most dangerous beauty practices of the time was the use of deadly nightshade to dilate the pupils and create a wide-eyed, innocent look.

Deadly nightshade, also known as belladonna, is a highly toxic plant that can cause hallucinations, paralysis, and even death in high doses. In small doses, however, it can be used to dilate the pupils and create a “beautiful” effect. Of course, the price of beauty was steep, and many women who used deadly nightshade in their eyes experienced serious health problems
