Things People Did To Their Bodies In The Past That Are As Interesting As They Are Terrifying

February 13, 2026 by Alanna Kaplan

Macabre Dentures

Finding suitable materials for dentures was a challenge back in the day, as many materials were either too expensive or didn’t provide a natural look or feel. As a result, dentists turned to alternative sources, including the teeth of dead soldiers. These teeth were often collected from battlefields or from soldiers who had died in hospitals.

The teeth were then cleaned and used to make dentures. Many dentists even advertised their dentures as being made from “Waterloo teeth,” a reference to the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Thank good for modern dentistry! After all, nobody wants to be chewing on a dead soldier’s teeth.
